We’re back Fabulous Foi watchers with an update from our ladies clothing inspired post…Taking the Mick.
You may remember that we asked WCC for details of a £6,057 payment to luxury ladies clothier Michael H:
As you can imagine we were thrilled to receive a reply from Alison Cathcart, Superintendant Registrar at Marylebone Town Hall, who seemed to have a plausible explanation for monies spent:
According to Alison…
“the company provided uniforms for 16 female Registrars who register and conduct wedding and civil partnership ceremonies both at the Westminster Register Office (Old Marylebone Town Hall) and at over 130 approved premises in the City such as Claridge’s The Ritz and The Savoy.”
Well, that’s ok then.
After all we wouldn’t begrudge Local Authority officers looking their best on the big day (although it has to be said most eyes are usually focused on the bride and not on the Registrar.)
In these times of austerity, we are pleased to note that Alison had frugality in mind when making her purchases…
“as the garments are purchased at cost price they work out cheaper per head than purchasing the equivalent quality garments from a high street store.”
Thank goodness for that.
What with WCC cutting hundreds of jobs, decimating disability services and leaving streets unswept at least we know they’re all in this together!
But hold on a second…let’s do the math shall we? Calculators out…
£6,057 divided by 16 = £378 per Registrar uniform.
£378????? Are you sure Alison that this is cheaper than the High Street?
Whilst we’re not suggesting you would be seen dead at the Savoy in a Primark ensemble you can pick up a super suit in Debenhams, Next, M&S etc for a fraction of the price.
In fact, you’d be hard-pushed to spend a hundred pounds!
Don’t take our word for it- give it a try…type in ‘ladies suits’ and check out those prices!:
On a final note, we do hope the male Registrars at WCC have been treated to a luxury outfit as well…what with the sex discrimination act and all that.
Maybe we should find out…
